Mission

Our mission is to empower the African American community with evidence-based knowledge about the relationship between stress and trauma and the 9 domains of wellness, to build practical skills of and provide access to holistic health interventions that prevent and/or promote effective coping to stress and trauma, and connect them to mental health resources, with the goal of significantly improving their quality of life.

Vision

We envision a healthy and whole community, where African Americans are thriving, with a healthy and balanced lifestyle from using preventative health strategies and effective coping mechanisms for stress & trauma.

VALUES:

9 Domains of Wellness

  • Physical Wellness:

Exercising; eating healthy; resting; doing preventative health maintenance, & maintaining healthy daily practices

  • Emotional

    Emotional Wellness:

Your ability to identify, express, and manage your full range of feelings; seeking help when needed; using self-regulation and mindfulness techniques to help you stay balanced

  • Spiritual Wellness:

Quiet self-reflection, reading, and open dialogue with others to explore the depth of human purpose, human connectedness, and seeking answers to questions like, “What lessons are life teaching me?"; isn't religion per se, but religious beliefs can be a guide; being open to exploring your own beliefs while respecting the beliefs of others.

  • Social/Relational Wellness:

Healthy relationships with healthy boundaries; building a network of support based on interdependence, mutual respect, and trust with your friends, family, and coworkers; developing a sensitivity and awareness toward others’ feelings or having emotional intelligence.

  • Financial Wellness:

Being fully aware of your financial situation; budgeting and managing your money to achieve realistic goals; analyzing your income; planning well - controlling your spending, saving for a rainy day, & investing.

  • Creative Wellness:

Expressing your emotions and views through the arts. You don't have to be a professional artist, you just have to have fun tapping into your creativity and taking time to appreciate the creativity of others; valuing and participating in a diverse range of arts and cultural experiences to understand and appreciate your surrounding world.

  • Environmental Wellness:

Appreciating your connection to nature; grounding exercises; recognizing the responsibility to preserve, protect, and improve the environment for now and future generations

  • Intellectual Wellness:

Mental agility from learning a new skill or concept; attempting to understand a different viewpoint; exercising your mind with puzzles and games; critically thinking; pursuing knowledge; developing moral reasoning; expanding worldviews; and engaging in education

  • Career Wellness:

Engaging in work that provides personal satisfaction, growth, and is consistent with your values, goals, and lifestyle; doing work that motivates you and lets you operate with full potential. If work feels toxic and you are unable to leave for whatever reason, you can feel empowered by changing your approach to the stressors.

Our Founder:

Robin Coleman, RN- MPH

Executive Director

Robin Coleman, RN-MPH has spent her career as a community and public health nurse serving the underserved population in Marion County for nearly 15 years. Because of her love for empowering other African Americans, she has volunteered to mentor through various community organizations and non profits. As a healthcare provider and community advocate, Robin understands the barriers African Americans face with healthcare, so she wanted to provide access to supportive tools additional to medication and/or therapy. Her passion for serving the most vulnerable is rooted in her lived experiences that mirrors that of those she serves. This program was developed from knowledge and skills she acquired to heal and work through her own mental health challenges. Robin’s expertise in health promotion, education, and behavior, program planning, implementation, and evaluation, trauma informed care, and quality improvement are the foundation for the work she does as a Healthy Equity Champion and Transformational Leader. She currently serves on the Indiana Public Health Association Board, the Healthy Equity Action Team, and the Black and African American Women’s Council.
